Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is an operation that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. It improves the shape and firmness of the abdomen where exercise and dieting no longer help — typically after significant weight loss or pregnancy.

A firm abdomen where exercise and dieting no longer help

Excess skin and subcutaneous fat on the abdomen can develop with excess weight, but also after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Abdominoplasty removes this excess and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall at the same time — improving both the shape and the firmness of the abdomen. It is a major operation, and a scar across the lower abdomen is part of it; that is why we talk about scars and recovery openly.

It's right for you if…

  • your figure is otherwise good, but loose skin and excess fat on your abdomen will not respond to exercise or dieting,
  • your abdomen has not returned to its former shape after pregnancy or significant weight loss,
  • your abdominal wall is weakened, or your straight abdominal muscles have separated (diastasis recti),
  • your weight is stable in the long term and you are looking for a lasting solution.
  • A tummy tuck is not a treatment for excess weight and no substitute for weight loss — it delivers the best results once your weight is stable and close to your target.
Tailored extent

Full abdominoplasty, or mini abdominoplasty

A full abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. The horizontal incision runs across the lower abdomen from one hip to the other, roughly 2 cm above the pubic hairline, and repositioning the navel is part of the operation. Where appropriate, the surgeon also sutures the separated straight abdominal muscles, firming the abdominal wall.

If only the lower or upper abdomen needs correcting, we speak of a so-called mini abdominoplasty. The operation is shorter, the navel stays in place, and the scar is smaller — easily concealed by underwear. Even at this extent, the abdominal muscles can be tightened along with the removal of excess skin. It also comes at a lower price.

It all starts with a consultation

At a free consultation, the plastic surgeon assesses the amount of excess skin and the condition of your abdominal wall, and recommends the right extent of surgery — a full abdominoplasty, or a mini abdominoplasty. They will talk you through the operation, the recovery, and where the scar will run. Because the operation is performed under general anaesthesia, you will have a pre-operative internal examination beforehand.

Five steps to a firm abdomen

The operation is performed in an operating theatre under sterile conditions and under general anaesthesia. It takes approximately 2–5 hours depending on the extent of the treated area and is followed by a hospital stay of at least one day.

  1. 01

    General anaesthesia

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia — you sleep through the entire procedure and feel nothing.

  2. 02

    The incision

The surgeon makes a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen, from one hip to the other, roughly 2 cm above the pubic hairline. For a mini abdominoplasty, the incision is shorter.

  3. 03

    Removing the excess skin

The surgeon removes the excess skin and subcutaneous fat, working upwards. In a full abdominoplasty, the navel is repositioned at the same time.

  4. 04

    Firming the abdominal wall

Where appropriate, the surgeon sutures the separated straight abdominal muscles — firming the abdominal wall.

  5. 05

    Sutures and compression

The surgeon closes the wounds, covers them with a sterile dressing, and fits your compression garment.

After the operation, you stay in hospital for at least one day.

What to expect after the operation

Day 0–1

After the operation, you stay in hospital for at least one day, resting under the care of our staff. You go home wearing your compression garment.

Weeks 1–3

For the first 2–3 weeks, follow a rest regime — take it easy and give your abdominal wall time to heal.

Weeks 2–4

You will return to work within 2–4 weeks — it depends on the type of work you do; it is individual.

Weeks 6–10

You wear the special compression garment for the full 6–10 weeks after the operation.

Month 3

The final result appears roughly 3 months after the operation, once the swelling has fully subsided.

Around 1 year

The scars gradually flatten and fade — allow about a year. They are more noticeable at first, but their appearance keeps improving with time.

A tummy tuck is a major operation — give the healing time. The rest regime in the first weeks and diligent wearing of the compression garment matter for the result just as much as the operation itself.

Is your figure otherwise good, but your abdomen no longer responds to exercise or dieting? That is exactly what a tummy tuck is for.

Tummy tuck pricing

The extent of the operation — and therefore the price — depends on the amount of excess skin and the condition of the abdominal wall. Whether a full or a mini abdominoplasty is right for you is assessed by the surgeon at a free consultation.

  • Tummy Tuck 2,340 €
  • Mini Tummy Tuck 2,050 €

The price includes general anaesthesia, the operation itself, the hospital stay, and post-operative check-ups.

These prices apply to procedures from 1 January 2027. If your procedure is booked for 2026, the price quoted when you booked still applies.

We speak openly with you

Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness in the operated area are all part of major surgery — they gradually subside, helped by keeping to the rest regime and wearing the compression garment.

Rarer complications include bleeding into the tissue (haematoma), a build-up of tissue fluid (seroma), infection, or impaired wound healing. An experienced surgeon minimises these risks with careful surgical technique — and you do your part by diligently following the post-operative regime.

Three weeks before the operation

To avoid unnecessary bleeding and bruising after the operation, do not take any preparations that affect blood clotting for about 3 weeks beforehand — medicines containing salicylic acid, Paralen (paracetamol), or enzyme preparations such as Wobenzym.

If you take warfarin or a similar medication, please discuss its use with your prescribing doctor.

You come to the operation on an empty stomach, and you should stop smoking at least a week beforehand.

Frequently asked questions — tummy tuck

A full abdominoplasty treats the middle and lower abdomen — more skin is removed, the incision runs from hip to hip, and repositioning the navel is part of the operation. A mini abdominoplasty corrects only the lower or upper abdomen: the operation is shorter, the navel stays in place, and the scar is smaller, easily concealed by underwear. Which extent is right for you is assessed by the surgeon at a free consultation.
With a full abdominoplasty, the scar runs horizontally across the lower abdomen from one hip to the other, roughly 2 cm above the pubic hairline; a small scar also remains around the navel, which is repositioned during the operation. With a mini abdominoplasty, the scar is smaller and easily concealed by underwear. Scars are more noticeable at first — they flatten and fade roughly a year after the operation.
Most patients return to work within 2–4 weeks — it depends on the type of work you do and on how healing progresses, so it is individual. We recommend a rest regime for the first 2–3 weeks after the operation; if your work is physically demanding, allow for the longer end of that range.
Liposuction removes fat deposits, but it does not address loose skin or a weakened abdominal wall — that is exactly what a tummy tuck is for. If both are troubling you, the two procedures can be combined; this is often done for a more pronounced slimming effect. What makes sense in your case is assessed by the surgeon at a free consultation.
Yes — where appropriate, the surgeon sutures the separated straight abdominal muscles during the operation, firming the abdominal wall. With milder separation, targeted physiotherapy can also help; whether exercise, surgery, or a combination is right for you is assessed by the surgeon at a consultation.
As a general rule: once your weight has stabilised and — after childbirth — once you have finished breastfeeding. The body needs time to settle after pregnancy or major weight loss. If you are planning another pregnancy, it is usually better to postpone the operation. The surgeon will discuss the right timing with you at a free consultation.
The operation itself is performed under general anaesthesia — you feel none of it. Afterwards, you stay in hospital for at least one day. In the first days it is normal for the operated area to be sore and tender; the pain is managed with medication.
You wear the special compression garment for 6–10 weeks after the operation. Its gentle pressure supports healing, reduces swelling, and helps the operated area hold its new shape. Your doctor will specify the exact wearing regime.
Pregnancy after an abdominoplasty is possible — but it stretches the abdominal wall again and may partly or entirely undo the result of the operation. If you are planning another child, we recommend postponing the operation until your family is complete. The surgeon will discuss your individual situation with you at a consultation.
The final result appears at around 3 months — and with a stable weight, it is long-lasting. Significant weight fluctuations or a future pregnancy can affect it, so a healthy lifestyle is the best way to maintain your result.
